After nearly half a century, one of Winnipeg’s most iconic intersections is once again accessible to foot traffic.
On July 1, 2025, Portage and Main reopened to pedestrians at street level, marking a new chapter in how Winnipeggers move through the heart of the city.

For decades, the underground concourse has connected thousands of commuters, shoppers, and residents to key towers and transit routes, and now people have more choice in how they experience downtown.
For residents at 300 Main, being steps from the city’s core was already a highlight, and now, with even easier access across downtown, you’re more connected than ever. This reopening isn’t just about traffic. It’s fueling a true downtown revival, with pedestrian activity already up nearly 30% from last year.
And there’s more to come. While surface-level access is expanding, the underground concourse remains a vital part of the downtown experience, offering year-round shelter and seamless connection between key towers and amenities. At the same time, the city is reimagining Graham Avenue as a pedestrian-friendly hub, bringing art, events, and local businesses to the forefront. Pair that with the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ’s stacked summer lineup — from live concerts and Furry Fridays to Chinatown tours and outdoor markets — and it’s clear: this isn’t just the centre of the city, it’s a connected, multi-layered destination.
So what does this mean for your everyday life?

It means more spontaneous coffee runs, shorter walks to events, easier access to the Canada Life Centre, the Exchange District, The Forks — you name it. It means more moments of connection, more freedom to explore, and a more dynamic city right outside your door.
Portage and Main now represents what it always should have, connection, at every level.
We’ll see you at the corner, however you choose to cross it.
